Just to let you all know that I passed my Bike Test today!





Tomorrow, I start the "Rides Again" element of this blog; - Commuting is the start of it, and then as many meaningful trips as I can squeeze in during the coming years....

This trip represents the culmination of an idea that was born at a barbeque two summer's ago;  Scott, myself and Jez standing around the bonfire, drinking beer, smoking cigars, and plotting tours of Europe - despite the fact that only one of us had a bike at the time! Commuting Week One - Thoughts

So I have now completed my first week of commuting to work on Gretchen, my 2006 BMW R1200GS. Now, I'll be the first to admit, that a big beemer is not the obvious choice for the daily commute.  However, I can only really afford the one bike at this juncture, so I had to choose the bike that would be able to do everything I needed it do do.  Which is commute, occasional shopping, day trips and touring.  Proper, long-distance touring.  I want a bike that can eat 500 miles in a day if I need it to, and carry enough luggage to provision me for a fortnight of touring. However, what about commuting?  Well let's start with the fact that I had never ridden a GS until the morning after I passed my test!  So my first commute, was also my first experience of riding a GS!  And boy, did I find that hard work! Then onward over the mountain And outward towards the sea They had come to claim the emerald Without it they could not leave (Emerald - Thin Lizzy) A Bike Camping trip to Ireland wasn't actually our first choice; if the weather and circumstances had allowed us, we would have set out across the Alps towards Venice, taking in some of the famous alpine passes in the Dolomites on the way there, and then the Italian Alps via Lake Como on the way back.  A bit ambitious, some might say!  But dreaming big hasn't gone out of fashion amongst my friends....  However, a combination of available time, a house move (Jez wasn't free to travel), weather window, and (in my case) financial commitments meant we cut back to a simpler, more affordable adventure in Ireland.  And specifically, the dramatic Atlantic coastline of the Kerry Peninsula.   Having watched a handful of videos on YouTube, we were smitten by the visual appeal of the area, and there were a c...
